Hotel 52
Pros:

Very easy book in , Jeanette was the receptionist who was very helpful , although reception stops at 18:00hrs . Your keys are in a lock out box which is indicated ( number to open) via a email and returned on leaving to same box . Access door up stairs is via a FOB , so security is good . The room is of in my opinion good condition and the bed very comfortable. Only minor in my opinion is the shower basin , it is smooth surface and a slip hazard . A non slip mat would be cheap option . Next door to the hotel is Rangos restaurant for breakfast / evening meal and carry out

Worst Hotel stay I’ve ever experienced!
Pros:

This really was the worst hotel stay I have ever experienced which makes me sad as the two staff members I spoke to on check in and check out seemed lovely.

I had booked to stay for 3 nights with my son who has autism and prefers small quiet hotels. When booking I was looking for a hotel close to the beamish museum and the review for this one seemed really good, plus an Italian restaurant joined on was a plus…or so I thought!

We arrived and check in was easy, the lock boxes seemed strange, especially when asked to leave the second key in the lock box for emergencies in case we were to get locked out the room, however that explanation seemed to make sense. This was until I realised the lock on room 13 doesn’t actually lock from the inside and prevent anyone with another key from being able to open it from the outside. This lead to me having to put the armchair up against the door, not that it would have provided much safety.

The reception isn’t manner 24/7 which is slightly worrying in the event of something going wrong but i know some hotels do operate like this. However, there was no security to get through the front door at the times that there are no staff working, you literally walk up to the from door and it automatically opens. As you go up the stairs you need a fob, but as we experienced, not if someone who has a fob walks up before you and holds the door open assuming you should be there.

In first arrival after a 3 hour drive the room looked light as it had 2 windows, I liked the 2 windows but that’s the only thing positive i have to say.
The room was roasting and the fan provided blew warm air whilst making a noise like it was on its last legs, thankfully I had brought a tower fan with us just incase as I expected warm weather so got it out of the car.

Night time come and we got constant slamming doors and loud banging, I thought it’s clear that other guest had no respect for other people what so ever but expected as it got quite late for the noise to reduce, it didn’t.
The slamming of the door that continued every few minutes til after 4am sounded like they weee trying to slam the door right through the wall, our room would shake with each slam.
By 2:30am my autistic child was trying to go to sleep after having his night medication for sleeping and the door slam would frighten him again. Then came the strong cigarette smoke smell that flooded our room, it was disgusting and my son was really struggling. It smelt like someone was smoking in our room it was that strong but here was a very big gap at the bottom of our door. By 3:30am I was still wide awake I got on live chat to hotels.com who I’d booked with and after telling them the situation and sending photographs of the door gap they advised me to put a wet towel across under the door to prevent the smoke smell. I went into the bathroom to check the vent and the noise coming from the vent was a loud strained buzz, the vent couldn’t be turned off if I wanted to but I’m not surprised it was making a strained noise because it was absolutely caked in thick dust/ dirty, it looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in years, it was vile and definitely a health hazard.

Hotels.com got in touch with the hotel manager and then advised me to call a number but I couldn’t as my son had just dropped off to sleep with exhaustion and if I’d have been on the phone talking he would have woken and gone into a meltdown, other guests would have been disturbed plus he’d already been unnecessarily distressed with the door slamming and smoke smell. I was advised to speak to reception the next day but the hotels.com agent did state that the hotel were aware of the dirty vent and the noise which are me wonder why they have sold a room that’s a health hazard?

This morning when my son woke up I got him ready as fast as could and ended our 3 night stay after just 1 night, I couldn’t put my child or myself through that ordeal again, I honestly didn’t feel safe in there.

The lady who checked us out did offer us another room but although it was a kind offer I really couldn’t ever stay there again. I had found a premier inn with availability in Newcastle Washington, and although it’s further away from where I wanted to be it’s very clean and safe, which is priority.
The lady who checked us out was lovely, showed her the photos of the door gap, filthy vent and broken tv remote, she understood why I was checking out. She did advise that the slam of the door and cigarette smoke was likely to have been the fire escape door which was right next to our room, someone must have been going by that door to smoke instead of going outside and that door apparently has to be slammed hard to shut or it won’t shut. Why are people using a fire escape as a smoking area for a start and imagine if whoever smoking didn’t quite shut that door, anyone could get in there and room 13 would be the first they come to with a door that doesn’t lock.
Absolutely abysmal, it was like Hotel Hellhole for us which is disappointing as the two staff members really did seem nice.
I will be requesting a refund for the 2 nights we were unable to stay due to health and safety failures. There’s no way I could have had any child stay there but a very vulnerable child who is registered disabled due to very complex needs is a definite never ever again :(

Also the restaurant wasn’t open even though online stated it was, however this was minor compared to the nightmare stay.

What a little gem
Pros:

I’m always weary of a cheaper end hotel, I’m a hotel snob really. But I needed a room last minute and my experience couldn’t have been better.

From the first call where the guy on reception couldn’t have been more helpful. I was arriving very late so the contactless check in was perfect. To my arrival to find a cute, clean, modern room with Yorkshire tea and a stack of biscuits.

I slept like a log in a really comfy clean bed and had what could be described as a luxury shower!

Amazing value, great place, if you’re in need to be anywhere near this hotel, I’d genuinely, highly recommend it!

Awesome find, I’ll be back.

Nice stay and convenient, as long as there’s no issues as there’s no one to help.
Pros:

Easy to find, easy accessible, clean

Cons:

Missing remote batteries in both rooms, no staff available as it’s all self check in, the restaurant was closed on the evening even though online said it would be open.

Overall a nice place
Pros:

Nice clean looking room, staff were great and looked after my needs as a wheelchair user

Cons:

Only real complaint was a faulty window in the room, there was a big fan in there but when switched on the decides where it wants to point

The room had 2 nice big windows but over looked residential bungalows and a park

A comfortable, nicely positioned hotel, but I would no stay again as a lone traveller.
Pros:

The reception staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean and the bed was very comfortable.
Also plenty of tea, coffee and milk provided and mugs which is great.

Cons:

The heat in the hotel was quite unbearable I asked for a fan on the 2nd morning but I was then out for the day and when I came back I hadn't been given one and had nowhere nearby to buy one.

I did not realise this hotel was unmanned at night, which would of been fine if there was a security system at front door but the door just automatically opened and the door at the top of the stairs had an access system, however, this wasn't working and I just walked through. So I did not feel very safe at night.

Very reasonably priced, very clean throughout and first class service.
Pros:

An excellent hotel, the room, for the price, was faultless, both the room and bathroom were spotlessly clean and the little additions such as tea/coffee facilities is a plus. The receptionists were excellent, friendly and helpful. I needed a cab to my destination from the Hotel and both companies I called advised there was a 20 minute wait, Adam, one of the receptionists advised, "Dont worry I will take you there in my car". That is what you call customer service!.

Functional but not for single women travellers
Pros:

Cheap and very clean. Good for short local stays.

Cons:

Entry is via an email and lockbox system as no staff after certain hours. Couldn’t get the key to work in room door, it took two fellow guests to help me out, apparently it’s a common problem. This really needs to be sorted out. Batteries in tv control needed but no one on site to help sort anything over night.

Pros:

Room was clean, location was 5 mins to Beamish and walking distance to small town centre

Cons:

No hot water in the tap, TV remote didnt work and despite reporting nobody looked to try and fix it despite advising they would. 3
Also family room for 3 had an extra bed for no reason so took up alot of space, would have preferred somewhere to hand clothes
