Sophy Hyde Park

I chose the Sophy Hotel primarily because of its proximity to the Obama Presidential Center, and overall I would stay here again. The Hyde Park location is one of the hotel's greatest strengths, providing easy access not only to the Obama Presidential Center but also to the neighborhood's restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions. I also appreciated the thoughtfully curated artwork displayed throughout the hotel, which reflects the character and history of Hyde Park and gives the property a unique sense of place.
The biggest highlight of our stay was the staff. Every front desk agent we encountered was exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and eager to help. I wish I could recognize them individually, but unfortunately no one wore name tags. The housekeeping staff was equally pleasant, and our rooms were spotless throughout our stay. The complimentary two bottles of water each day were also a nice touch.
There were, however, several disappointments. We reserved three rooms, and while two were ready when we arrived, the third was not available by the hotel's guaranteed check-in time.
A more significant issue was the air conditioning in all of the public spaces. It was out of service when we arrived on Monday and was still not repaired when we checked out on Wednesday—in July. Because of this, the bar and restaurant were closed for our entire stay, which was disappointing. The hotel did offer a complimentary continental breakfast to help compensate for the inconvenience, but it was served in the unairconditioned lobby, making it less enjoyable than it otherwise would have been.
The in-room amenities also didn't match what was advertised. The amenities list stated there was a shuttle to the museum, but we were told there was no shuttle service. The record player in our room didn't work, and there was no iron or ironing board despite both being listed. In addition, the follow-up emails addressed me as "Theresa" instead of Joyce—a small detail, but one that suggests room for improvement in guest communications.
Despite these issues, the outstanding service from the staff, the cleanliness of the rooms, the beautiful artwork, and the hotel's excellent Hyde Park location made for a pleasant stay overall. I would stay at the Sophy again, but I hope the maintenance issues are resolved and that the amenities information is updated to accurately reflect what guests can expect.

As a loyal IPrefer member and repeat guest, I was disappointed by my most recent stay at Sophy Hotel. I requested early check-in months in advance, but that request was not accommodated despite my loyalty. I continue to choose Sophy whenever I visit Chicago, even though there are many excellent luxury hotel options available.

Unfortunately, the overall service fell well below the standard I have come to expect. The hotel restaurant was understaffed, resulting in slow service, and I was not offered one of several comfortable lobby tables that were clearly available. In addition, the air conditioning in my room was not functioning properly, which negatively impacted my stay.

The one bright spot was Tiarra at the front desk, who went above and beyond to address my concerns. Her professionalism and genuine care were greatly appreciated and made the experience more manageable.

The hotel's location remains outstanding, but the quality of service during this visit was subpar at best. At this point, I am genuinely questioning whether I will continue choosing Sophy for future visits.

We had a great time at Sophy- love the art, the vibe, the location. Room was comfortable, cozy homey. I’d definitely come back!

The property is centrally located in Hyde Park. The facilities in general are nice, but I did experience some operational issues. The art throughout the hotel is absolutely beautiful! I wish I could have hung around in the lobby more, but the A/C was out.

Great staff, clean room, and wonderful atmosphere. Even though the downstairs was an absolute furnace, the staff were still very welcoming and made this a good experience!

I will never stay there again. Arrival: Hotel A/C was out, but no the staff made no mention of it, didn't warn me the restaurant was closed. Requested a higher floor, was told he didn't have access to see the status of higher floors and said that my room, #423, had a nice view. Accepted that as true, arrived in room to a view of the back parking lot. Bedding was stained. Called to notify front desk. Housekeeping came up, started changing the mattress pad with another stained mattress pad. The 3rd mattress pad was clean... The Housekeeping person complained the whole time, telling me it was time for her to go home. They charge $15 for microwaves - if they can find one available. Requested a late checkout. It was granted, but returned to the hotel to find my room's access card deactivated. Had to come back to the front desk, waited in line of others checking out, only to be told that they deactivate all cards at 11 am any way... Do, I waited for another member of the hotel staff to escort me to my room, to give me access. I was charged an extra daily amenities charge, which I will contest for credit. I will not return.

The beauty of the hotel's art and architecture stands in sharp contrast with its shabby service and absent amenities. HVAC broken in lobby and hallways the entire 3 days of our stay, room not ready on arrival, waited 45 minutes before I reminded front desk to give us keys, staff surly and unpleasant, manager and assistant manager both missing in action, restaurant closed due to no HVAC, lobby windows open during Canadian wildfire smoke with AQI over 550. Only 2 ice machines and both broken, no valet parking, no room to drop off and unload just a disorganized cluster of cars and delivery trucks fighting for room. One bellhop was pleasant and professional. We will never stay here again, nor at any property under the same management.

I had the most incredible stay at Sophy Hyde Park. I stayed at this property because it was close to my son's new apartment, and it was move-in time for U Chicago. As is the case with most moves, everything that could go wrong did go wrong, so it was amazing to be able to come back to the hotel to recharge our batteries. Sophy is an oasis in Hyde Park.

The lobby and restaurant are chic and welcoming, the staff is amazing, and the food and beverages were divine. My room was fantastic - it was spacious, well appointed, and equal parts artsy and luxurious. And that shower - wow!

I couldn't possibly give this hotel a higher review - it was truly magical.

I'm thrilled I discovered Sophy Hyde Park because I will be staying here quite often!

The only reason I did not give them a perfect score was the lack of onsite parking which we were aware of when making the reservation. It actually was a little annoying when we got in late one night and Inhad to drop my wirlfe off, go park, and then walk about 2 blocks. The area is safe and there was a good amount of law enforcement presence. The location was fantastic and only 10 minutes from the Obama Center. The staff was not just friendly, but personable. The hotel was clean and fresh, and had a very beautiful artistic presentation! The restaurant staff was excellent and shout out to the young man whose #1 job was to keep the water full and flowing! He lerform his job with excellence and courtesy 💯💯💯 One of the managers of the restaurant spoke with us and was extremely pleasant.

Sophy has nice art, and has potential but dont book here if you are used to staying at luxury hotels. This hotel is not even a step above Hilton or Marriott, the Hyatt is a block away from Sophy, looks better and is cheaper. Front desk staff was kind, the room could have been cleaner, and the bed could have actually been a king sized bed.

Parking is not a thing and dropping off luggage and picking it up isn't easy as well, the hotel has ZERO parking, you have to park at a target/apartment parking garage almost 2 blocks away and walk back.

The room as 2 drawers one on each night stand, not ideal for a longer stay.
The food smelled really good and the restaurant stayed busy, I will return to try the food and bar, im just staying at the Hyatt.

Something that really stood out to me is the carpet surrounding my bed in my room was visibly dirty like a winter sludge looking carpet that was wiped down but clearly still dirty, in fact the carpet in the hallway was way more clean then the room, oddly more clean than the room, it made no sense. Someone medicine was on the floor of my room makes me wonder if the room had even been swept and vacuumed.

The decor is very beautiful, and we had forgot some nice cologne behind that the staff found and returned.

Sophy is a cute hotel, but it is not at all luxury, nor is it worth the cost. I've stayed in Chicago hotels before, Vegas hotels, island resorts, and regular Hilton, Marriott or Holiday Inn hotels.

Location

The desk staff were cordial and friendly. The restaurant group was exceptional from the manager to the purple haired waitress that has been working there for 7 years. We ate there 4 times in our 2 day stay and had delicious breakfast and great lunch every time.

Fun and gorgeous hotel. I found the price point to be extremely fair compared to other hotels of a similar caliber.

I considered giving this review four stars because the front desk staff was a bit chilly and unwelcoming. We had a snag and she immediately stated that the hotel couldn’t do anything about it, but we were able to figure out an easy solution ourselves. I imagine that she could have suggested the easy solution instead of putting up a quick brick wall. Upon check-in she was fine but there was no warmth whatsoever and it really didn’t vibe with how incredibly warm and thoughtful the actual hotel is.

I found the rooms and decor to be genuinely delightful and it’s clearly is designed with a ton of care and love. I would return here in a heartbeat. Thank you for an amazing stay!

Excellent accommodations. Clean property; friendly and helpful staff. Room was spacious, clean, with lots of amenities. Perfect location with easy access to resturants, stores, and the Obama Presidential Center and Museum. I highly recommend the Sophy Hotel. Ate in the resturant and bar; the food was good and the atmosphere friendly and welcoming. A great place to hang out, meet friends, and chill from a day of travel, etc.

Our stay was wonderful! The hotel was clean, comfortable, and in an unbeatable location. Being just across the street from the Baskin-Robbins where Barack and Michelle Obama had their first date made the experience even more special. It was the perfect home base for visiting the Obama Presidential Center and exploring the surrounding Hyde Park neighborhood. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and always eager to help with recommendations. Our room was quiet, well-appointed, and made for a relaxing retreat after a day of sightseeing. I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting this historic and vibrant area of Chicago.

One night i feel hungry i asked him to show me restaurant close to hotel he show me one and he go with do not keep me alone it was cold but i forgot my jacket in hotel .he went with me till i reach restaurant it was far like may be 500m and he go back hotel in few mint i was eating my dinner i see samual front of me in table with jacket he bring me jacket from hotel and he came back to me he give me jacket and leave. He’s the best there other staff they was good also but samual the best

This is such a cool hotel, record player in the
Room and located right across from the Obama’s kissing rock! Also the beds were very comfortable and a there was a huge beautiful bathroom.

Hotel was in a great location, staff were great for the few interactions we did have, close too alot of amenities, room was clean and well kept
