A perfect spot to stay while visiting University of Chicago. The location was perfect -- we walked to and from both days, enjoying the neighborhood and parks along the way. The artwork in the Sophy is bar none -- my son is an artist and that made the stay even more special. The rooms are incredibly spacious, and the front desk team were engaging and made us feel welcomed. Will be our go-to when visiting campus!

Tried to check in early they told me I could check in at 2 . Got to the hotel at 2:15 said rooms weren’t ready come back at 3 which is my regular check in time. Got to the hotel a little after 3 and rooms still aren’t ready and I hear them telling people the key card machine is down so they can’t give them key cards.
Not very accommodating. Had an emergency which cause me to stay at a hotel for a night or two. Since they were close I chose this hotel I’ve had dinner there before and drinks at the bar which I enjoyed but my experience at the hotel side is I won’t have to come back. Rooms look great staff and customer service not no much. I stick to a drink at the bar.
We just love staying at this hotel. Such attention to detail, the artwork, the room layout, the staff. And it's walking distance to Uchicago.
Location, great room
Price a bit high
Decor was classy. Location was close to where we wanted to be. Rooms were spacious and quiet.
Convenience fee seemed high for what you got. Most hotels would include in their nightly rate so it makes it more difficult to compare.
The hotel is great, food is exceptional, and the service is finally up to par (has been abysmal in prior years). But beware - not having a parking garage available is a major hassle, especially during busy weekends
Proximity to our event
The waitresses in the lounge were dismissive of us
A beautiful hotel with excellent rooms at an excellent location. Strongly recommend it for ether business or leisure.
Nice enough, if overpriced property, with 'faux' antique. Is a magnifying glass or small tinny record player really useful? But when it comes to customer service, it really misses. First there is a 'resort' (i.e.junk) fee for a hotel with few ammenities. I had left something behind in the room and that evening left a message for the general manager on their web site form. No reply in 5 days, so finallly called. It took 10 minutes on hold to come back and ask another question, whic was followed by another 12 minutes on hold after which I gave up.. Please give me compentent, if boring any day.
The employees at the front desk were excellent. I would recommed staying there again. Close to University of Chicago hospital.
We visit Chicago regularly. We LOVE the Sophy. It's where we always stay.
Walking distance from many places including Lake Michigan (with a great view of the downtown skyline), University of Chicago, etc. It's in a real residential neighborhood that's very nice.
The staff are outstanding in every respect.
Housekeeping and hotel maintenance are great as are the rooms and lobby.
Excellent restaurant.
My stay at SOPHY Hotel exceeded every expectation. From the moment I arrived, the exceptional hospitality from Tiara, Chris, and Josh made me feel genuinely welcomed. Director Ivy and Ops Manager Teisha clearly run a seamless operation, and it showed in every detail of my stay.
Mesler Kitchen Bar Lounge was a highlight of my stay. Restaurant Manager Debbie gave me a wonderful tour, and my server Maurice provided impeccable service. I will definitely be requesting him on my next visit.
What makes SOPHY truly special is how it thoughtfully integrates art, music, science, and literature throughout the property. It feels less like a hotel and more like a cultural hub rooted in the Hyde Park community.
The personal touches, including a bottle of Prosecco and a beautiful book on Hyde Park’s history, made the experience even more memorable.
I highly recommend SOPHY for anyone seeking a thoughtful, design-forward boutique stay in Chicago.
I love the SOPHY hotel. It's close to the University of Chicago, has a lovely vibe, and friendly staff. I've stayed there several times, but this last time it was severely understaffed. I was hoping to get breakfast--which does not open until 7:30--and no one showed up until 7:50 am. Then there was one server for a 10-15 guests who had all been patiently waiting for 20 minutes. I tried to order room service the next day, but no one ever answered the phone. There aren't a ton of fabulous food places around the hotel, so this was more of a problem then it might have been elsewhere.
The hotel is nice, but for me it misses the mark. I appreciate the higher end amenities, but it took the usability of it all out of it. The afternoon drink, the restaurant, the record player with one record in the room. I get it, but it wasn’t for me. It’s almost so cool that it forgets to be practical.
We loved the boutique feel of this hotel. The hardwood floors in the room were great as well. We were doing a tour of UChicago so this was the perfect location. So many food options locally as well. The staff were very welcoming and spoke everytime we entered and left. Odd note, the lobby smelled amazing everytime!
