Rarely have we felt so welcome and personally well treated as here.

As a starting point for long hikes, we found here the perfect balance between peacefulness and coziness, superb spa facilities, incredibly tasty food and the best wine, fine interior design choices... all in a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere.

You can clearly feel that the cool and friendly couple who run this place put their heart and soul into creating the best possible setting for their guests.

The nostalgic and beautiful decorated corner room, the tranquil village atmosphere, the beautiful South Tyrolean surroundings, the extraordinarily high level of service, the fantastic breakfast setup, the culinary highlights in the evenings, the rich wine list where elegant local wines dominated, the quiet and beautifully integrated spa area... it's impossible for us to describe our excitement and gratitude in 1500 characters.

We experienced a completely fantastic week at this unique family-driven gasthof, where everything worked and where everything screams for a return visit. To Josef Schrott and the entire team... Thank you!

Joseph and Cristine run not only the best hotel but arguably provide one of the best overall experiences you can get in worldwide travel today. We were on a family trip with throughout London, Edinburgh, Malta, Bologna, and Venice for 2 weeks and it wasn't until we reached their storybook Gasthof palace perched on a hill high above Bolzano that one realizes how absolutely perfect a hotel and its staff can really be. From Nadine in the spa to Anda serving drinks on the patio overlooking the Alps to the pitch perfect wait staff at dinner in the dining room, everyone and everything was simply surreal. Breakfast was amazing… Fresh pastries, fresh jams, fresh, squeeze, juice, and eggs made to order… All with a view that is out of a storybook. The location is somewhere that most people would never dream would be even possible to stay. Think: a view out of the "Sound of Music" with the service of a five star hotel. Joseph and Christine make you feel like family from the moment you arrive to the sadness you feel when you have to depart. It is the type of place where you immediately start examining your calendar diary to try to figure out when you can come back. A rare gem...and at the top of the list, with all of the experiences of our travels in 35+ different countries over the years.

We had the most amazing experience at the Kohlern Inn—truly five stars all around. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the receptionist, and the kindness and attentiveness continued throughout our entire stay.

The inn is perched at the top of a mountain with stunning views overlooking Bolzano. Our room was spotless, spacious, and beautifully decorated—such a peaceful and relaxing setting.

The restaurant was absolutely phenomenal. Every meal we had was outstanding, with incredible food and a wine selection that was clearly curated with care. They went above and beyond to make my husband’s birthday dinner feel really special, including a delicious dessert made just for the occasion.

A huge thank you to the owners, Josef and Christina, who made us feel so welcome. Their warmth and personal touch really made this place feel special. We’re already talking about coming back—such a fabulous experience from start to finish!

We were really happy with this hotel, which is perched in a hamlet above Bolzano (you can drive some hairpin turns or take a fun cable car). We had a lovely view from our room and took the 1/2 board so that we didn't have to worry about driving back at night after dinner. The food was very good, as was the service and we loved the local wines, which were excellent value. The breakfast was especially delicious, with gorgeous local cheeses.
This hotel could be a challenge for someone who needs an elevator as there isn't one to get to the rooms.
We enjoyed some nice walks around the hotel, up into the hills. There was a nice sauna downstairs and a pool, and a calm rest area, which was nice after a day of walking.

Nice and cozy place, very friendly staff, good wine, delicious food, and a stunning view of Bozano city. The perfect place to escape the rush of city life and be close to nature. Be aware that you have to drive 20 minutes uphill to get there, but it's worth it. Highly recommended.

What makes a hotel special today? In my opinion, it is the people who work there and the philosophy behind it. It is also about paying attention to nature and respecting the environment, e.g. the traditions in the region. It is also about letting the guests participate in it by introducing them carefully, without the need for rules. That is an art these days. This is crowned by a lavishly laid table, without waste and excess, but with the special composition of the dishes and the selection of ingredients.
You will find all of this at the Gasthof Kohlern. Authenticity among the people who work there. Respectful interaction, lightness and relaxedness as a natural coexistence - guest and host. Exciting stories, integrated into nature. You don't want to leave there and yet it may be precisely the leaving that makes you look forward to the specialness of coming back. Superb location, extremely helpful staff, and fantastic food (particularly the breakfasts). Strongly recommended. We visited as one stop on a walking holiday in August/September 2023. The close proximity to the cable car to Bolzano means that staying here confers upon you the option of visiting the city, or enjoying rural tranquility.

We have been at this Gasthof previously and it is now better than ever. New refurbishment and addition of suites makes it a perfect retreat for relaxation, or as a base for wonderful hiking in the forest above Bolzano.

Up on the mountain, when the serpentine narrow road ends, serenity begins. The place is beautiful, the host is friendly, and the staff are always smiling. The room 'refugium' overlooked the mountainside was breathtaking. The food was delicious. Can't complain.

My family and I stayed two nights at this hotel. The views of Bolzano are amazing, and the hotel is situated just a 5 minute walk from the funicular (gondola) tram that connects with Bolzano. The staff was very professional and nice, and the management super helpful. They gave us public transit cards that allowed us to get all the way to downtown museums without any extra cost.

Breakfast buffer was delicious, and the dinners were a 4- or 5-course affair. They took a few hours, sure, but the dishes were delicious.

The hotel offers a sauna and a pool, and we enjoyed those after our long hikes.

The location is great, staff was amazing, we loved out time there.
