Stylish comfortable easy place to stay. Lovely public spaces and bar. Helpful cheerful staff. Brasserie and Restaurant food was delicious and great food well executed. Super location.
Seemed to be absence of a manager running anything- felt like the Marie Celeste at times. (We didnt go off season). Gluten free English breakfast was poor. Attic room needs new curtains to replace torn ones, while still retaining country house style.

I went back and forth on whether to rate 9 or 10 - in the end, the lovely staff and their accommodating approach won out and I went for a 10! The property was better than I expected from other reviews; I had chosen the place based on location close to some friends. I stayed in a 'deluxe twin' room - beds were actually quite big, more like small double beds. Linens were crispy clean, room was very big and bathroom with a large bathtub and super water pressure filling the bath very quickly. I do not like cooked breakfast, so when I told the young staff members I would not be in for breakfast they suggested a packed lunch instead which was hugely appreciated, and they sought me out to make sure I took it with me in the morning! Had dinner there with some dear friends the night before, and dinner in the restaurant was excellent. Restaurant much quieter than the bar. Nice public lounge and good bar area. Overall I loved it. The room was very quiet even though it was a busy Saturday night in the bar and restaurant. I was at the end of a 10 day holiday staying in airbnbs and the professionalism at this hotel was much appreciated.
Unfortunately there was a problem with the sash window - the top window sagged down, and I did not realize but literally hundreds of midges were coming in! I realized this just before going to sleep. Fortunately there was a fan in the room and I followed online advice to keep a fan going, and nothing attacked me in the night! Do not open the window! The wallpaper also could do with replacing as it had stains in some areas. However for me, the staff, the very comfy big 'single' bed and the size of the room, plus the midges not actually biting me, led me to give this place a top review.

Un hôtel ancien dans son jus. Calme et confortable. Excellent petit déjeuner avec du choix et des produits de qualité. Trés copieux pour ceux qui veulent.
Une bonne étape entre le nord de l'Angleterre et les Scottish Borders.
Le parking est assez plein car il y a aussi un pub et un restaurant. Attention pas d'ascenseur mais aide pour porter les valises. Le sunday roast du restaurant rappelle la nourriture des années 1970 ....
The hotel was very clean, staff very helpful
Window in bathroom was jammed open making the room chilly at night. The duvet was very lightweight. There was no central light in the room and the lamps didnt adjust with dimmer switch. Not enough milk on the hospitality tray. The key fob on the door was loose, making it difficult to lock and unlock the room (room 11). At breakfast served with mushroom instead of blackpudding without any consultation on the substigution. Had to ask for milk for coffee and remind again about serving toast. Not value for money on this occassion.
Lovely staff, good atmosphere, great breakfast and good menu for dinner either in the bistro or restaurant. Well stocked bar and choice of wine. Nice gardens if the weather is good.
