This part of the route connects Dublin’s Viking and medieval origins with centuries of British administration and the traditions of old Dublin. Dublin Castle served as the centre of English and later British rule in Ireland from 1204 until independence. Nearby, Christ Church Cathedral has stood at the heart of the city for almost 1,000 years, while St Patrick’s Cathedral remains one of Ireland’s most important historic buildings. The route then continues through the Liberties, a neighbourhood associated for generations with markets, craftsmanship, brewing, distilling and traditional Dublin life. These locations will normally be experienced panoramically or as exterior stops unless a cathedral or Dublin Castle interior is specifically selected. Temporary 2026 notice: Dublin Castle’s public interiors are closed from 5 May until 31 December 2026. During this period, the castle must be presented as an exterior landmark, subject to local access restrictions.
