This is a self-guided exploration game where you'll be solving a paranormal case involving real people and their wandering ghosts. The file on old Brisbane Town has never been closed. You, with your detective and observational skills, and a little help from the app, will try to close it in 2 hours.
The route runs downhill from the convict windmill on Spring Hill to the river, past 13 of the city's oldest addresses. Your job is to hear out the dead and check their stories against the record.
You'll discover dark stories like the convict women whose prison hill was shaved flat, the ferry that sank in seconds in 1896, and the commandant who logged every one of his floggings as lawful.
Each location involves inspecting a real-world object and solving a challenge.
Best after dark with your phone torch on. About 3 km of walking, with unlimited breaks.
Hints and 24-7 support if you get stuck.
Perfect for Halloween or any night you're in the mood for creepy ghost stories.
The game starts at the Old Windmill on Wickham Terrace. After booking, we'll message you a code and activation link. Activate with your own email, then log in to the Questo app with that email. No message? Open the app, tap "Bought a quest somewhere else?" and enter your booking reference number.
The game ends behind Old Government House, by the river on the QUT Gardens Point campus.
You'll start at the Old Windmill on Wickham Terrace, where the app opens your case file and introduces the agent running it. Your first task is to compare a photo of the tower with the real thing and spot what's missing. You'll learn why convicts were made to turn Queensland's oldest building by hand whenever the wind dropped.
You'll walk down to King Edward Park at the top of Jacob's Ladder and use a number code on a park sign to find a password. You'll learn about the Second World War air-raid shelter dug into the slope, three minutes from a mill that was built to punish.
You'll cross Anzac Square, decode a scrambled instruction and search the memorial's columns for the answer. The ghost stories pause here. You'll learn why the square was lined up with Central Station, so that soldiers leaving and coming home marched through it.
You'll stop at the General Post Office on Queen Street and find an inscription nearby to complete a damaged fragment. You'll learn that the building stands on Gaol Hill, shaved flat in 1871, where about 135 convict women once plaited sunhats for the men.
You'll step into the Brisbane Arcade, restore a question with its vowels missing and find the answer on the building across the street. You'll learn about the 1848 murder of Robert Cox, and why the deathbed confession tied to the arcade's ghost appears in no record.
You'll reach Reddacliff Place by the Victoria Bridge and compare a city sign with your photo to find what's missing. You'll learn about the ferry Pearl, which sank in seconds off this bank in 1896, on a crossing that only ran because the flood had taken the bridge.
You'll stop at the Commissariat Store, built by convicts in 1829, then follow directions down a set of park stairs to answer a question about a convict woman. You'll learn what still survives inside the building, gallows beam included, and why its axe-murder ghost has no name on record.
You'll follow the riverside path by the City Botanic Gardens to a blue bird sculpture and track where its beak points to find a four-letter warning word. You'll learn why the river keeps none of the settlement's ledgers, and why the agent on your case needs a moment here.
You'll stop outside Parliament House on George Street, find a cross-shaped pattern in the ground and pick the matching pair. You'll learn about Captain Richard Coley, the Sergeant-at-Arms said to haunt a building he never worked in.
You'll finish at Old Government House, where the numbers you've collected all night point you to a statue round the back. You'll learn about Queensland's first governor, and the wife who gave her name to a river, a town and a hospital and still stands in his shadow.
