At night, La Jolla Cove belongs to the sea lions and the surf, and the village above it goes quiet. That's the setting for this self-guided ghost hunt, played on the Questo app from Ellen Browning Scripps Park, past the Sunny Jim Cave and up through Prospect Street, Wall Street and Girard Avenue.
Ten spirits are trapped along the route, all of them original characters, each stuck on the mystery that ended its life. You'll catch them by cracking their puzzles: an evacuation plan for a hotel on fire, four years of class registers with a phantom pupil, a museum's artifacts out of order. Every ghost you catch gives something away about the one that's been lying, and the last puzzle asks you to name it.
Plan for about 90 minutes and 1.4 miles. Play whenever you like, alone or with your crew. If a puzzle stalls you, there are hints in the app and a support team who can help 24/7.
The game starts at Ellen Browning Scripps Park. After booking, we'll message you a code and activation link. Activate with your own email, then log in to the Questo app with that email. No message? Open the Questo app, tap "Bought a quest somewhere else?" and enter your booking reference number.
The game begins on the grass of Ellen Browning Scripps Park, above the cove. The app connects you and checks you can see what most people miss, using a ring of glowing numbers with one gap. Your first ghost turns up right here: a bride whose flowers blacken as soon as she touches them.
Along the Coast Walk, by the way down to the Sunny Jim Sea Cave, two ghosts wait above the water. You'll work out a blood type from the chart of a doctor who died in the 1952 flu outbreak, then find four digits hidden in the script of an actor struck by a falling spotlight on opening night.
Up on Prospect Street, the village's main drag, you'll put a senator's evidence folders in order. Margaret Chen was close to exposing corruption on the water board when a call about her daughter sent her out into the rain. Around Wall Street and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, you'll then spot the made-up pupil in a teacher's registers, the forgeries in an antique dealer's shop, and the one book that opens a librarian's locked closet.
Your last three ghosts are on Silverado Street and Girard Avenue. A professor's artifacts need sorting by civilization, a hotel fire needs a proper evacuation order, and a vanished priest's organ still won't stop playing at night.
You'll finish back above La Jolla Cove. The app spreads out every clue your ghosts gave you, and you'll pick out the Evil One, the ghost that lied, before the night is over.
