The sanctuary was created because of the need to rescue bears found suffering in small and rusted cages around the country. The sanctuary construction started in 2005, and today there are over 70 rescued bears living in several large forested enclosures measuring around 27 hectares in total. These forested areas contain large freshwater pools, hibernation dens and hundreds of trees with lush natural vegetation.
Commonly known outside Romania as Dracula's Castle, it is a national monument and landmark in Romania. The fortress is on the Transylvanian side of the historical border with Wallachia.
