One of the true hidden gems of Rome is the Basilica of San Clemente, a basilica built on top of a church that was converted from an ancient Roman house.
Travel back in time with each level that the tour will go down: from a 12th-century basilica to a 4th-century church to a 3rd-century Mithrauem to finally a Roman house from the Roman Republic era.
The first part of the tour will cover the Basilica, while the second part will descend to Mithrauem and the archeological site.
Your guide will be waiting for you in front of the entrance of the basilica.
Basilica of San Clemente
A three-tiered complex of buildings: a basilica built in the Middle Ages on top of the ruins of a 4th-century church that, in turn, had been converted out of the home of a Roman nobleman. The basilica has a rich history, from the Roman Republic era to a Mithraeum to a church to the present-day minor basilica.
The Mithraeum of San Clemente, one of the few remaining Mithraeums in the world still open to the public, is the second part of the tour.
