In 2000, this area is officially recognized as the Biosphere Reserve Zone by UNESCO with the typical flora and fauna of the mangroves. Can Gio Biosphere Reserve Zone was formed on the vast delta of 3 rivers: Dong Nai, Saigon and Vam Co Dong.
Can Gio mangrove forest with a very special environmental condition is an combination of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem as well as an mixture of freshwater and saltwater ecosystem. The forest area is 75,740 hectares, with over 150 botanical species.
