Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda. Explore Phnom Penh’s most famous royal landmark and one of the city’s finest examples of traditional Khmer architecture. Walk through the public sections of the palace complex, surrounded by golden roofs, landscaped gardens, ceremonial halls, and decorative details. Within the grounds, the Silver Pagoda houses important Buddhist objects and sacred treasures. Access may vary depending on royal ceremonies and official events.
Wat Phnom. Visit the historic hilltop temple traditionally connected to the founding of Phnom Penh. According to local legend, the site was established after a woman named Penh discovered sacred Buddha statues near the river. Climb the landscaped hill to see the Buddhist sanctuary, statues, decorative stairways, and peaceful temple grounds. The site remains an important religious and cultural landmark within the city
Central Market / Phsar Thmei. Discover one of Phnom Penh’s most recognisable buildings, housed beneath a large yellow Art Deco dome. Explore its spacious central hall and surrounding wings, where vendors sell jewellery, clothing, electronics, souvenirs, flowers, food, and household goods. The market remains an active centre of local commerce as well as an important architectural landmark. It is an ideal place to experience the city’s energetic everyday atmosphere.
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum / S-21. Visit the former Security Prison 21, one of the most significant historical sites in Phnom Penh. Originally built as a school, the complex was converted into a detention and interrogation centre during the Khmer Rouge period. Its preserved rooms, photographs, documents, and exhibitions provide a powerful account of those who were imprisoned there. The visit is deeply moving and offers essential context before continuing to Choeung Ek.
Choeung Ek Genocidal Center / Killing Fields. Travel outside central Phnom Penh to Choeung Ek, now preserved as an educational and memorial site. Walk through the grounds, follow the marked historical route, and visit the memorial stupa dedicated to the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime. Information displayed throughout the site explains its history and connection to S-21. An audio guide may be available locally and is strongly recommended for visitors seeking deeper context.
