Perched high on a cliff overlooking the Argeș River gorge, Poenari Citadel is one of Romania's most dramatic medieval strongholds. Originally erected in the early 14th century, the fortress was famously expanded and fortified in the 15th century by Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Țepeș), the historic figure behind the Dracula legend, who used it as a strategic mountain refuge. The Journey to the Top Reaching the ruins requires a steep physical ascent: 1,480 Concrete Steps: Visitors must climb nearly 1,500 stairs cutting through a dense beech forest to reach the citadel entrance. Elevation Gain: The climb spans several hundred vertical meters up Mount Cetatea. Duration: The walk takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on fitness level, with several resting points along the way. The Reward: At the top, visitors are met with panoramic views of the Făgăraș Mountains and the northern start of the Transfăgărășan highway, alongside the preserved stone walls of Vlad's actual fortress.
