Leave the fog and the cable cars behind for two days in the high country, where San Francisco gives way to some of California’s most legendary scenery. You head east into Yosemite National Park for an afternoon among sheer granite walls, thundering waterfalls, and quiet meadows, with classic sights like El Capitan and Half Dome rising overhead. After a comfortable overnight stay, day two carries you south to Kings Canyon National Park, where giant sequoias tower over deep, glacier-cut canyons in the southern Sierra Nevada. It is a refreshing reset of fresh mountain air, big trees, and bigger views before the easy drive back to the Bay.

Spread across more than 740,000 acres of the Sierra Nevada, Yosemite National Park is the kind of place that looks unreal in person. Glaciers carved its sweeping valleys and polished its granite faces over the ages, leaving behind icons like El Capitan, one of the largest granite monoliths on Earth, and the unmistakable crown of Half Dome. Water is everywhere in the warmer months, from the long plunge of Yosemite Falls, the tallest waterfall in North America, to the misty ribbon of Bridal Veil Falls. With meadows, towering trees, and clean mountain air at every turn, an afternoon here goes by far too quickly.
This morning we will depart from Fresno and travel to Kings Canyon National Park. This dramatic landscape testifies to nature's size, beauty, and diversity! Then, we will have a lovely lunch and head back to San Francisco. Itinrary: Hotel → Kings Canyon National Park Visitor Center (30 min) → Founders Grove (75 min) → San Francisco
Kings Canyon National Park: Tucked into the southern Sierra Nevada of eastern California, Kings Canyon National Park is a wilderness of steep granite walls and some of the deepest canyons in North America, carved over millions of years by ice and the Kings River. A stop at the visitor center sets the scene, with an introduction to the park before you head out among the big trees and forest trails.
Founders Grove: A gentle, shaded walk leads you through a grove of towering giant sequoias, among the largest living things on the planet, with cinnamon-red trunks wide enough to stop you in your tracks. Standing beside trees that have weathered hundreds and even thousands of years is the kind of slow, grounding moment these mountains do best.
