The Corinth Canal is a canal in Greece that connects the Gulf of Corinth in the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. Completed in 1893, it cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese peninsula from the Greek mainland. The canal was dug through the Isthmus at sea level and has no locks. It is 6.4 kilometres (4 miles) in length and at 24.6 metres (80.7 feet) wide at sea level, it is impassable for many modern ships. It is currently of little economic importance and is mainly a tourist attraction.
Your journey begins at the spectacular Acrocorinth, an ancient fortress rising dramatically above the Corinthian landscape and one of the locations associated with the filming of The Odyssey. Explore its monumental walls while your private guide brings to life the stories of Agamemnon, Odysseus and the heroes of the Trojan War.
Discover Pylos and the Bay of Navarino, a landscape deeply connected with the ancient world of Homer and the kingdom of the legendary King Nestor.
Then arrive at the breathtaking Voidokilia Beach, one of Greece’s most spectacular natural landscapes and a location used in The Odyssey. From here, look toward Nestor’s Cave, where the rugged landscape evokes the mythical world of Odysseus and the Cyclops.
Your journey continues to the magnificent Methoni Castle, a dramatic medieval fortress standing at the edge of the Ionian Sea. Walk across its historic stone causeway toward the famous sea fortress of Bourtzi and experience one of the most cinematic landscapes in southern Greece.
