The world belongs to those who rise early. Cape Town awakens under the powerful presence of Table Mountain, and experiencing the morning light from Table Mountain is always something truly special. There is nothing quite like watching the city come to life from above, with Table Mountain offering the closest feeling to standing at the top of the world in Cape Town.
We hike up Table Mountain in the morning hours to enjoy the calm of dawn, when the trails are still quiet and uncrowded. From Table Mountain, you can watch the soft morning light spread across the city as it slowly awakens below. Even on overcast days, it remains a remarkable experience, as you are often above the clouds.

What to expect

Platteklip Gorge (("Flat Stone" in Afrikaans) is the most popular and direct hiking route up Table Mountain and has become known as the "Stairway to Heaven". While it is the shortest route to the summit, the hike is challenging, gaining approximately 650 metres in elevation over less than 3 kilometres. This classic Table Mountain hike begins beneath the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and steadily ascends to the contour path. The hike then follows a scenic trail along the slopes of the Mountain, offering beautiful views of the city and surrounding landscape before joining the Platteklip Gorge hiking trail. Historically, the stream flowing through Platteklip Gorge provided fresh drinking water for early Cape Town settlers. From here, the trail climbs relentlessly upward, following a well-maintained zig-zag path through the dramatic gorge. As you gain altitude, the gorge narrows and the scenery becomes increasingly spectacular. The final section is particularly impressive, with towering rock walls rising on either side and narrowing to just a few metres apart. Although demanding, the rewards are exceptional, with breathtaking views as you approach the summit of Table Mountain.
