In the Shadow of the Mountain takes you through the Plateau neighbourhood and traces the roots of Montreal’s Jewish community through early 20th century Yiddish and English literature, culminating in the global success of Leonard Cohen. By way of poetry and novels, this tour explores how Jews envisioned their life in Montreal and contrasts these utopic visions to the realities of life in the city. Alongside an expert museum guide, you’ll also discover the ways in which Montreal's Jewish community made the Plateau their home at the foot of the mountain, and made a lasting impression on its landscape.
We will meet you just in front of 4129 Boulevard Saint Laurent, directly in front of "H. Fisher et Fils."
Please note that while we are running outdoor food and walking tours, the museum's interior space is currently closed.
Stroll along Montreal’s historic and iconic boulevard St-Laurent and avenue Mont-Royal while you catch a glimpse of Montreal’s numerous murals and street art.
Take a break from the bustle of downtown with a walk through Parc Jeanne-Mance, along the beautiful avenue de l'Esplanade, right across from the Mount Royal. (**Note: this tour does not go up Mount Royal).
See Leonard Cohen’s longtime home in Montreal and other places he frequented, as you learn about his life living in the Plateau neighbourhood and the Jewish literary scene he grew up in.
