Most nature tours near Tamarindo explore its estuary. This walk takes you to nearby Playa Avellanas, where local biologist and naturalist guides help you discover coastal forest, mangroves, estuary and beach on foot.
With a group of no more than eight, we take our time to look for wildlife and understand the connections between these habitats. Your guide lives in the area and shares firsthand knowledge of its plants and animals. As we walk, we pick up litter along the route.
The conservation work continues beyond the tour: Oropopo, our guides and the Avellanas community lead a local mangrove conservation project. A $2 contribution per participant is included in your booking.
What's Included
Meeting and pickup
Pickup is available for an additional fee, which varies depending on the distance to the meeting point. The fee must be paid by credit or debit card at least 48 hours before the tour using a payment link we will provide.
Transportation is provided by an independent, trusted third-party transportation provider and is not operated by Oropopo Experience. The provider works with us solely as a transportation partner.
From Tamarindo/Langosta Area: $165 up to 4 people then an additional $10 per person
From Junquillal Area: $80 up to 4 people then an additional $10 per person
Other areas further away: $200 up to 4 people then an additional $10 per person
Meet your guide at Cabinas Las Olas in Playa Avellanas, near Tamarindo. Transportation is not included. Contact us in advance if you need help arranging a ride at an additional cost.

Meet your guide at Cabinas Las Olas in Playa Avellanas. After a brief introduction, set out on foot to explore the coastal habitats nearby.

2Playa Avellanas
Walk through the forest edge and along a local road that also serves as a wildlife corridor. Your guide pauses to look for birds, monkeys and other animals, and explains the plants you encounter.

3Playa Avellanas
Enter the mangrove and estuary to discover where fresh and salt water meet. Look closely for crabs, birds and other wildlife while your guide explains why this habitat matters and shares Oropopo’s local conservation work. IMPORTANT NOTE: During high tide, you may get wet up to waist level. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

4Playa Avellanas
Explore the beach and intertidal zone for the small creatures revealed by the changing tides. Along the way, help pick up litter as a simple way to care for the habitats you have explored.

5Playa Avellanas
Finish the walk reaching the iconic Rochelles Mangrove Bridge, a symbol of conservation. Learn its story and take a final look at the mangrove habitat before returning to the meeting point.
