Guests are guided through St. Joseph Plantation, where rooms are staged with authentic mourning displays—black crepe-draped mirrors, funeral attire, and décor used to honor the dead. You’ll learn about Antebellum & Victorian mourning customs, funeral traditions, and superstitions surrounding death in Louisiana plantation culture. The tour explores how families dressed, celebrated, and memorialized loved ones, offering a glimpse into practices both foreign and familiar today. Outside, stroll the grounds and hear stories of those who lived and died on the property—planters, workers, and enslaved people—connecting the landscape with the realities of life and loss. This evening optional experience is both haunting and thought-provoking, offering a rare chance to witness history through the lens of grief, remembrance, and tradition.
