As you descend towards Sri Lanka's eastern dry zone, the landscape gradually changes into open plains, reservoirs, scrub forests, and agricultural areas. Upon reaching Lahugala, you will begin an exciting safari through Lahugala Kitulana National Park with an experienced tracker. Although one of Sri Lanka's smaller national parks, Lahugala is an important habitat for Sri Lankan elephants. The park's reservoirs and grasslands attract elephants, especially when they gather near the water to drink and feed. During the safari, you may also encounter water buffalo, spotted deer, wild boar, monkeys, crocodiles, and a variety of resident and migratory bird species.
