Start your cycling journey from Maibara Station, a convenient hub served by the Shinkansen. Rent a bicycle and explore the beautiful Lake Biwa area at your own pace.
Ride through the scenic foothills of Mt. Ibuki, one of Japan’s most famous mountains, where clear spring water flows into Lake Biwa. Along the way, you can visit places such as the historic post town of Samegai-juku, known for its preserved streets and peaceful riverside scenery.
Your rental includes an admission ticket to Rosa & Berry Tawada, a large English-style experiential garden featuring seasonal flowers, and a themed area inspired by Shaun the Sheep.
This is a self-guided experience with no tour guide. You can explore freely and stop wherever you like before returning your bicycle by 5:00 pm.

What to expect

Upon arrival at the cycle station inside Maibara Station, you will check in and receive your bicycle before starting your ride. You can choose between a road bike for a more active ride or a cross bike for a more comfortable experience, based on availability. This is a self-guided experience with no fixed schedule, allowing you to explore freely at your own pace.
Your rental includes admission to Rosa & Berry Tawada, a large experiential garden designed around the natural landscape. Visitors can enjoy a beautiful English-style garden covering approximately 13,000 square meters, featuring around 400 varieties of roses and seasonal flowers throughout the year. The site also includes a themed area recreating the world of “Shaun the Sheep” and opportunities to interact with animals, offering a relaxing and enjoyable stop during your ride.
You may also visit Samegai-juku, a historic post town along the old Nakasendo route. This area preserves traditional Edo-period streets and is known for the clear waters of the Jizo River, where delicate aquatic plants bloom, creating a peaceful and unique setting.
A suggested model course is available to help you plan your day. The route combines nature, historical towns, and lakeside scenery, but you are free to adjust it based on your interests and pace.

Ride 7.0 km (approx. 40 min) → Rosa & Berry Tawada
Ride 5.5 km (approx. 40 min) → Mishima Pond
Ride 3.6 km (approx. 30 min) → scenic countryside route
Ride 2.9 km (approx. 30 min) → Roadside Station Ibuki no Sato
Continue along local cycling paths
Ride 8.3 km (approx. 50 min) → Samegai-juku (historic post town)
Ride 8.3 km (approx. 50 min) → Irie Bridge
Ride 7.2 km (approx. 50 min) → Nagahama area
Ride 1.0 km (approx. 7 min) → Kurokabe Square (free time / sightseeing)
Ride 1.5 km (approx. 8 min) → return toward Nagahama Station
Return via Irie Bridge
Ride 2.7 km (approx. 15 min) → Maibara Station (return by 5:00 pm)
