Palace of Dueñas and Pilates' House

3 hours (approximately)
Offered in: English and 1 more

This tour, which takes approximately three hours, covers the two most emblematic palaces in Seville after the Alcázar.
While the Alcázar is the most famous monument for the tourists, they sometimes forget to seek out the charming corners hidden within the high, whitewashed walls of other equally beautiful palaces.
The Palace of the Dueñas and the Palace of Pilatos share a common thread: Catalina de Ribera, one of the most important women and one of the most aristocratic families of the 16th century.
Catalina de Ribera and her husband not only commissioned the construction of both palaces, but in one of them, they broke all the rules of architectural aesthetics of the time.
Two oases of verdant gardens, with beautifully carved walls and exciting stories of legends, an impossible love, wars, pillaging, and survival through the centuries and despite life's adversities.

Itinerary

Duration: 3 hours (approximately)
  • 1
    Palacio De Las Duenas

The Palace of Dueñas is, perhaps along with the Cathedral, the Alcázar, and the Santa Cruz neighborhood, one of Seville's most famous monuments. This palace belongs to one of Spain's most illustrious families: the House of Alba, whose origins date back to the 14th century. Its current owners decided to open it to the public in 2016, following the death of the last Duchess of Alba. There, visitors can enjoy not only a peaceful and romantic stroll through the gardens that inspired such renowned poets as Machado, but also visit the most emblematic rooms where one of Seville's most beloved figures lived: María del Rosario Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart y Silva, a descendant of James II of England and his lover Arabella Churchill, known as the last Duchess. Visiting the Palace of Dueñas offers a deeper understanding of Cayetana's life and allows her to share in her zest for life.

    Casa de Pilatos

Pilates' House, located in the square of the same name, invites us to visit one of the city's lesser-known monuments and one of the most damaged during the wars that Seville has endured. However, as Disney said in "Mulan": "The flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest and most beautiful of all." And Pilates' House is precisely that flower, having withstood so much adversity and offering us a romantic and decadent beauty, with a history full of symbolism, mythology, and legends. The ideal visit to better understand our culture, our architecture, and the hidden magic of some of Seville's corners.
