    Winter Garden Auckland Domain

One of Auckland Council’s jewels, the Wintergarden at the Auckland Domain, is a treasure of great historic interest. It was designed in the early 1900s in the style of the famous English partnership of Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll and opened in 1913. Rare and spectacular plants, including Amorphophallus titanum (corpse flower) and a large collection of chrysanthemums, in an ever-changing display, can be seen in each of the two barrel-vaulted Victorian-style glass houses, which front onto an extensive courtyard and sunken pool. The marble statues in the courtyard between the glass houses were added in the 1920s and 30s by local businessman William Elliot. One house is heated and showcases lush tropical and heat-loving plants, while the other displays temperate plants that change with the seasons.

    Mount Eden

At 196m tall, Maungawhau or Mount Eden is the highest volcano in Auckland. Maungawhau is a large, elongated scoria cone consisting of two overlapping cones which erupted in close succession about 28,000 years ago. The older, lower northern cone had its crater filled with scoria ejected by the second eruption. The southern cone is the youngest and tallest, with an impressive crater 180 meters in diameter and 50 meters deep. Mt Eden Park is one of Auckland's volcanic cones. Passengers have to walk up the hill on their own for 15 to 20 minutes.
