Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is one of Sri Lanka’s most famous ancient sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa, Sigiriya was used as a royal palace and fortress. The king built his palace on top of the massive rock for protection and surrounded it with beautiful gardens, ponds, and water systems. The entrance was designed as a giant lion, giving the rock its name, “Sigiriya,” meaning Lion Rock. Today, visitors can still see the huge lion paws at the entrance. Sigiriya is also famous for its ancient frescoes, Mirror Wall, and breathtaking views from the summit. After King Kashyapa’s death, the site became a Buddhist monastery. Today, Sigiriya remains one of Sri Lanka’s most visited cultural and historical attractions.

Pidurangala Rock is an ancient Buddhist monastery site near Sigiriya in Sri Lanka, with history dating back over 2,000 years. During King Kashyapa’s reign in the 5th century, monks from Sigiriya were relocated here when the rock was developed as a royal fortress. The king restored Pidurangala and gifted it to the monks for meditation and religious use. It became a peaceful monastery with caves and shelters used for Buddhist practice. Today, visitors can still see ancient remains, including a reclining Buddha statue inside the main cave. Pidurangala is now a popular hiking spot, offering stunning views of Sigiriya and the surrounding landscape, combining history, nature, and spirituality.
Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 2,000 years of history. King Valagamba took refuge here in the 1st century BC and later built the temple after regaining his throne. The complex has five caves with Buddha statues, ancient murals, and carvings showing Buddhist history. It remains an important religious and cultural site in Sri Lanka.
