Perast is one of the most beautiful Baroque towns in Montenegro. As a former sailor center it still shines with marvelous buildings, pretty churches and a romantic waterfront. Perast has a long history, which is dating back to the 13th century. As the center for boaters, captains and sailors, the small town grew steadily and gained wealth at the 16th century. During a walk through the old town you can still admire many splendid villas and marvelous buildings, which have already been well restored. Inside the old town along the narrow streets you will find around 16 different churches. Probably the most famous church in Perast and one of the main attractions is the Church of St Nicholas. With a 55-meter-high bell tower, it is the highest building in all of the Bay. In the old town guests can visit Bujovic Palace. This architectural masterpiece is located directly at the sea promenade and it is the only palace in town, that can be visited from inside.
After free time in Perast we will visit island Our Lady of the Rocks with the church built in 17th century. The only man-made island on the Adriatic, The island made by scuttling old ships and depositing stones around a small crag. The church houses a venerable 15th century icon of Virgin Mary, now know as Our Lady of the Rocks, and an altar made of Carrara marble is a work of Genovese sculptor Antonio Capelano. Because the church was so important to the area, the interior was richly decorated with many art gifts through time. Behind the church there is a small museum dedicated to history of Perast. The courtyard in front is known as “Place of Reconciliation.” Today the small island church acts as a sort of cultural center of Catholics of Boka.
