The Cu Chi Tunnels are an immense network of subterranean passages, storehouses and dwellings, that form part of a much larger network of tunnels that criss-cross much of the country. The tunnels can be found 75 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, in an area that played an important role during Vietnam's wars for independence and reunification. More than 200 km of tunnels were built here by the Vietnamese guerrillas. Today, the region offers a poignant and impressive insight into their struggle for independence, highlighting the hardships they endured and the ingenuity with which they met adversity, overcame seemingly insurmountable odds and defeated their foes. The tunnels form a major highlight of historical touring in South Vietnam.
