The castle tower is the only remnant of the castle built in the 16th century and demolished in the 19th century after a fire on the castle square. Since 1984, one of the oldest collections on inland navigation on the Rhine has been presented here. The house operating under the River Shipping Museum shows exhibits on shipbuilding history, trade and trips on the river, and the ecology of the Rhine. History is brought to life in pictures, films, and archives. It is particularly practical and illustrative on the top floor: From the café there, visitors can enjoy the best view of the river and the Rhine ships sailing there.
In a unique synergy of live animals, illustrative exhibits, and interactive media, it allows one to experience and understand the origin, evolution, and diversity of animals and plants. From large rays to small shrimp, from agile penguins to sluggish crocodiles, 500 different animal species are gathered here. The theme of evolution is the common thread that runs through the unique institute of zoo/aquarium and natural history museum: The tour tells the story of living beings - from their origin and spread in the sea, the conquest of freshwater, to the colonization of all terrestrial habitats. The in-house amphibian protection and breeding station, where various endangered animals are kept and partially successfully bred, has already been awarded by the UN on several occasions.
(reduced admission with the DüsseldorfCard) To get an overview of the geographical conditions, there is no better place in Düsseldorf. Therefore, the detour is recommended for every newcomer: MedienHafen, Old Town, Hofgarten, Königsallee, and the Rhine with its family of bridges lie at his feet here. The visit to the tower, built between 1979 and 1982, in the Japanese restaurant Qomo, which welcomes its guests at an altitude of 172.5 meters, can be extended to the most pleasant. Here the 360-degree panorama of sushi and miso soup passes by within 72 minutes. In this period, the local rotates once on its own axis.
