The K20 of the NRW Art Collection at Grabbeplatz presents masterpieces of classical modernism and international contemporary art. Works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian, Joseph Beuys, and Gerhard Richter meet here with changing special exhibitions featuring significant positions in art history.
The K21 in the historic council house is dedicated to international contemporary art. In the light-filled architecture, installations, video works, and sculptures by renowned artists meet a diverse program of talks, performances, and concerts.
The museum visit will be a pleasure. Everyone should feel welcome, that is the motto of the Art Palace. The Kunstpalast app, which makes artworks experienceable with augmented reality among other things, and the spaces for children designed by illustrator Christoph Niemann also contribute to this. Children of all ages are welcome anyway and there are special offers. The Kunstpalast collection contains over 130,000 objects, of which around 800 can be seen in a chronological tour through 49 rooms. Art from eleven centuries is shown. Besides famous works by Rubens, Yves Klein, and others, design objects such as the Aldi plastic bag by Günter Fruhtrunk or Birkenstock shoes can be discovered. Thanks to the app, you never lose your bearings. In addition to the collection, there are changing exhibitions by artists such as Gerhard Richter and Tony Cragg.
In group and solo exhibitions of international relevance such as "Sneaker" or "Wonderwalls," at festivals, symposia, film screenings, and workshops, the NRW-Forum addresses current social issues and consciously seeks dialogue with visitors. The NRW Forum primarily targets a younger core group – the focus is consistently contemporary, digital, innovative, experimental, and surprising.
A spectacular place for an unusual idea. The KIT Museum, short for Art in the Tunnel, is located under the Düsseldorf Rhine promenade – in a room between the tunnel tubes for road traffic. On 888 square meters, there are up to four changing exhibitions annually. Below, young contemporary art, specifically sculpture, painting, photography, video, and installation art, is shown among concrete walls, while above, the strollers enjoy the Rhine panorama. However, one does not exclude the other: The entrance to the art house is a glazed pavilion – it houses the KIT Café and is one of the most beautiful dining spots by the river. So the view of the left Rhine meadows can also be fully enjoyed before and after the enjoyment of art with coffee or wine.
In the brutalist building erected in 1967 at Grabbeplatz, opposite the Kunstsammlung K20, hides an important art location in Düsseldorf. The Kunsthalle, popularly called "Kunstbunker" because of its windowless concrete facade, does not have its own collection and focuses on changing exhibitions. And although it is probably known to all Düsseldorf residents, there is a detail that not everyone knows: A black oven pipe by Joseph Beuys protrudes from the western exterior wall. "The Black Hole" was installed in 1981 as a replica of a chimney pipe received in the Beuys studio at Drakeplatz. Where art connoisseurs mingle during the day, dancing happens at night. In the same building, the Salon des Amateurs, a legendary nightclub for avant-garde electronic music, opened in 2004.
