Rome keeps some of its most gripping history underground, and this tour takes you straight to it with an expert guide and round-trip transport from the city center. You start among the bone-lined chapels of the Capuchin Crypts, where the remains of generations of friars form haunting displays, then ride out along the ancient Appian Way, passing the Aurelian Walls and the Circus Maximus. Underground again, you follow dim corridors through one of Rome's early Christian catacombs, tracing frescoed chambers and tombs once reserved for martyrs and popes. Your guide fills in the stories behind each site, so you leave with a real sense of how the early Christian world took shape beneath the city. Meet your guide in central Rome in front of the Fontana del Tritone. After a short introduction, your small group sets off for a day beneath the city.

2Museum and Crypt of Capuchins Friars
Just a short walk away, descend beneath the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione into the Capuchin Crypts. With an audio guide, explore chapels lined with the bones of generations of friars and learn how these displays reflect a long monastic tradition. (Not included on the Express Tour)

3Appian Way (Via Appia Antica)
