Is there a place in Greece that combines a gorge, a river, a lagoon, a beautiful sandy beach and a palm forest?
forest? The answer is yes, and it is Preveli beach. The beach is located at the exit of the Kourtaliotis gorge where the river of the same name ends. It is one of the most famous beaches of southern Crete and receives thousands of visitors every summer.
Behind the impressive sandy beach begins the second largest palm forest of 40 hectares, which is home to the endemic Cretan Theophrastus palm. In the heart of the forest, the visitor loses all sense of time and space. You can follow the marked path (and it is advisable not to stray from the path) and enjoy the greenery and the sound of running water.

1Kourtaliotiko Gorge
Our first stop is the breathtaking Kourtaliotiko Gorge, one of Crete’s most stunning natural wonders. This dramatic gorge is carved by the Kourtaliotis River, with towering cliffs on either side and a landscape that showcases the island’s rugged beauty. As you step out to admire the view, you’ll feel the refreshing mountain breeze and hear the distinctive “clapping” sounds that give the gorge its name. From the viewpoint, you can enjoy sweeping vistas of the deep ravine, spot the small chapel of Agios Nikolaos nestled into the rock, and marvel at the power of nature that shaped this impressive terrain. This is also the perfect opportunity to take some spectacular photos and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Though our stop is brief, it offers a moment of reflection and a final connection with Crete’s wild and beautiful landscape before we continue our journey.

You will arrive by bus in the beautiful coastal village of Damnoni, where our escort will meet you and assist with purchasing your boat tickets for the next part of your journey. From there, you'll board a boat that will take you along the stunning southern coastline of Crete to the famous Preveli Palm Forest — one of the island’s most iconic natural attractions. This unique beach features a rare palm grove, the Kourtaliotis River flowing through a dramatic gorge, and a scenic shoreline where the river meets the Libyan Sea. Once at Preveli, you’ll have free time to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Swim in the crystal-clear sea or the refreshing river lagoon, walk beneath the shade of the palm trees, or hike along the river’s edge. The surrounding cliffs offer spectacular viewpoints for photography or quiet moments of reflection. Preveli’s unspoiled natural beauty makes it a peaceful and memorable stop on your journey through southern Crete.

After your visit to the beautiful Preveli Beach and Palm Forest, you will board the boat once again for a relaxing return journey along the stunning coastline back to Damnoni. As you sail across the clear blue waters, take a final moment to enjoy the views of the rugged cliffs and untouched landscape that make this part of Crete so special. Upon arriving in Damnoni, you will rejoin your bus for the short and scenic drive to the charming seaside village of Plakias. Nestled between the mountains and the Libyan Sea, Plakias is known for its laid-back atmosphere, beautiful beachfront, and variety of local tavernas and cafes. Take this opportunity to unwind, sample the local cuisine, explore the village’s small shops, or simply sit back and enjoy the coastal charm before the journey continues.
