Vienna, Austria

2 to 3 hours (approximately)
Offered in: Norwegian and 2 more

This exciting tour, led by art historian Jan Kepinski, takes you through the Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM), Vienna's Art History Museum, with a special focus on Pieter Bruegel the Elder, one of the 16th century's most celebrated painters. The KHM holds the largest Bruegel collection in the world — roughly a third of his surviving paintings.

Beyond Bruegel, we'll take in the museum's other icons: Raphael's Madonna of the Meadow, Titian's Venetian masterpieces, Velázquez's royal Habsburg portraits, Vermeer's The Art of Painting, Rembrandt's self-portraits, Dürer, Caravaggio, Correggio, Rubens, and Arcimboldo's astonishing composite heads.

Jan is an art historian, a state-licensed Austria Guide, and a master storyteller. The tour suits newcomers seeking an introduction to art history just as well as seasoned Bruegel enthusiasts.

You will leave with a rich understanding of art across the Renaissance and Baroque, set against the backdrop of one of the finest museums in the world.

    Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna

This tour takes you through the Kunsthistorisches Museum's world-class Old Masters collection, with a special focus on its outstanding Flemish paintings. Beyond Bruegel — whose collection here is the largest in the world — you'll encounter works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer, Titian, Velázquez, Raphael, Dürer, and Caravaggio, tracing the artists who shaped the course of art history. We'll explore the historical and socio-political context behind these paintings, along with the techniques that made them revolutionary — all inside one of the grandest buildings in Vienna. Completed in 1891 under Emperor Franz Joseph, the museum's Neo-Renaissance palace mirrors its twin, the Natural History Museum, across Maria-Theresien-Platz. Its domed entrance hall is a masterpiece in its own right: marble columns, gold leaf, and allegorical murals — including early work by a young Gustav Klimt.
