    Dunedin Railways

Your New Zealand Food Tour starts and finishes at the iconic Dunedin Railway Station. Designed in the eclectic Flemish Renaissance style by architect George Troup, whose lavish embellishments earned him the enduring nickname "Gingerbread George" . Built from dark basalt rock sourced from Strath-Taieri and trimmed with creamy white Oamaru limestone, accented by pink granite colonnade pillars, terracotta roof shingles from Marseille, and a 37-metre clocktower. The grand booking hall floor features nearly 750,000 mosaic tiles (replicated in 1965), bordered by an ornate Royal Doulton porcelain frieze displaying railway motifs and locomotives visible from the mezzanine balcony. Opened on 12 November 1906, the station was once the busiest rail hub in New Zealand.
