Drive over the iconic Harbour Bridge for views of the upper harbour, North Shore, and city.
Begin your adventure at Takapuna, where you'll explore a rocky coastline which was once an ancient forest and learn about Auckland's volcanic history. You'll have the opportunity to purchase a coffee or ice cream from a local cafe while enjoying the beach.
Take a gentle walk through a rare surviving fragment of ancient lowland rainforest, which once would have covered much of the northern part of Auckland. From the forest floor, marvel upwards at the many mature native trees and see the famous Five Sisters – a cluster of five large pūriri trees that sprouted from the fallen trunk of an ancient giant 500 years ago!
Follow a short track to reach a treetop bridge, 18 metres up, which allows a birds-eye view of the canopy below. Listen to the birdsong, and learn about the history of kauri logging in New Zealand.
Follow a stream up the valley through a freshwater wetland area to reach a small waterfall, admiring species such as native nikau palms, cabbage trees, reeds, vines, and other epiphytes. Learn the Maori and European settler history of the area.
Visit Birkenhead Wharf for great views across the water to the city, and choose between taking the ferry back to the city centre under the Auckland Harbour Bridge (included), or driving back over the bridge to be dropped off by your guide.
