What to expect

During this guided evening adventure, you'll paddle by sea kayak across the Hauraki Gulf from Sullivans Bay to Motuora Island, a predator-free wildlife sanctuary.

After meeting your guide and receiving a safety briefing, you'll launch your kayak and enjoy a scenic paddle along the coastline. Along the way, you'll take in stunning coastal views and may spot wildlife such as dolphins, stingrays, and seabirds while learning about the area's natural history, conservation efforts, and Māori heritage.

Upon arriving at Motuora Island, you'll step ashore and explore the island on foot. Your guide will lead you through regenerating native forest, share the island's conservation story, and stop at viewpoints overlooking the Hauraki Gulf.

As evening turns to night, you'll join a guided wildlife walk through the sanctuary. Using red-light torches and moving quietly through the bush, you'll search for New Zealand's iconic kiwi and listen for their distinctive calls. You may also encounter tuatara, giant wētā, geckos, and seabirds returning to their burrows after dark.

After your wildlife experience, you'll kayak back across the gulf under evening skies and return to Sullivans Bay.
