What to expect

Palo Verde is a good place to start because it offers a variety of natural bird habitats, including wetlands, grasslands and a dry forest. The Rio Tempisque runs through here. During the rainy fall season it floods, creating a broad marsh area that attracts many migrating birds. You’ll see some beautiful birds here, including snowy white herons, roseate spoonbills and green-backed herons. Also look for great egrets, glossy ibis, black-bellied whistling ducks and blue-winged teals. The Tenorio rainforest is not only known for being the best place in Costa Rica to see sloth, it's also one of the birders and photographers favorite places for bird watching. Situated between the Miravalles and Tenorio Volcanoes, that is technically a Caribbean Slope location but has the distinct advantage of getting crossover species from the dry forests of Guanacaste. For those less familiar with neotropical bird life, Toucans, Trogons, falcons, eagles, hawk, Aracaris, Tanagers and Honeycreepers, many of them brightly colored, may be seen around the Tenorio rainforest, For the more experienced birder, Bijagua is the place to see Tody Motmot and Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo.
