Most waterfall tours in Guanacaste end at a viewing platform. This one ends inside the canyon. You follow a shaded trail through tropical dry forest near Rincón de la Vieja and then go up the river itself, past turquoise pools, through a narrow stone canyon, into caves and over rope-assisted scrambles. The last stretch is the part people remember: you swim a short distance through the canyon to reach La Leona and the stone beach in front of it. Life jackets and safety equipment are provided and your guide is beside you at every crossing, so you do not need to be a strong swimmer — but you do need to be comfortable in water, because swimming is the only way in. The reward is a waterfall pouring into a brilliant blue pool with nobody else there. Fully private: just your group and a local naturalist guide who knows every rock, rope and pool on the route, setting the pace to your group rather than to a schedule.
