What to expect
Your first landmark is the Piazza Grande, Locarno's magnificent main square where the film festival's 8,000-seat open-air cinema is set up every August — and where the rest of the year it simply functions as one of the most elegant piazzas in the Swiss canton of Ticino.
From there the app guides you to Castello Visconteo, the 13th-century fortress built by the ruling Visconti dynasty of Milan, now housing an archaeological museum and offering commanding views over the rooftops and the lake beyond.
The route concludes at the Walk of Fame Locarno, the Swiss answer to Hollywood Boulevard, where the festival's Golden Leopard winners have left their handprints in the stone — a charming piece of cinematic mythology in a very Swiss setting.
Around 2 hours on foot. Locarno is compact, flat, and entirely pleasant to explore.
