What to expect
Your first landmark is the Brausebrücke, a historic bridge over the Ilmenau river where Lüneburg's water-powered mills once drove the salt trade that made the city one of the richest in northern Europe for three hundred years.
From there the app takes you to the Rathaus, one of the finest medieval town halls in Lower Saxony, whose Gothic and Renaissance facade fronts the main market square with the authority of a city that was once more powerful than Hamburg.
The route concludes along the Gasse 'Auf dem Meere', an evocatively named alleyway — its name means 'on the sea' — that winds between tightly packed merchant houses and salt warehouses, preserving the texture of a medieval trading quarter in remarkable condition.
Around 2 hours on foot. Lüneburg's old town is very compact and rewarding to walk slowly through.
