What to expect
Your first landmark is Schloss Ahrensburg, a well-preserved Renaissance castle built in the 1590s and still standing in its original form — complete with moat and two flanking towers.
Next, the app takes you to the Historische Schlossmühle, the historic castle mill on the lake's edge, whose waterwheel once ground grain for the castle estate and now stands as a picturesque piece of living history.
The route concludes at the Gottesbuden, a row of medieval almshouses built in the 17th century to house the poor — a quietly moving example of early social responsibility.
Allow around 2 hours for the full tour. Comfortable shoes recommended for the cobbled paths around the castle grounds.
