    La Cruz

La Cruz is a small town in northern Guanacaste, near the Nicaraguan border, with a fascinating place in Costa Rican history. The area witnessed events connected to William Walker’s nineteenth-century invasion and later served as a landing point for arms supplied to Contra rebels during the 1980s. Today, La Cruz has around 10,000 residents and attracts nature lovers and kite surfers from around the world. Its name means “The Cross” and comes from a local legend. A mule reportedly died while chasing an escaped cow, and the other mule drivers marked its grave with a cross made from sticks. The cross became a landmark where travelers rested and counted their cattle before continuing to Liberia.
