Santo Domingo: Gualey Neighborhood, Cable Car & Home-Cooked Lunch

5 to 6 hours (approximately)
Offered in: English and 1 more

Santo Domingo as its people live it. Your guide meets you at Eduardo Brito metro station and walks with you into Gualey, the neighbourhood on the banks of the Ozama River where the city's cable car begins. The visit is possible thanks to years of work with community leaders: you arrive as a guest, not a spectator.

You'll stop at the colmado, the heart of neighbourhood life; play a game of dominoes, meet local artisans, taste freshly brewed Dominican coffee and see the springs where neighbours still bathe. You'll ride the cable car with the people who use it every day while a local tells you how these neighbourhoods grew, and cross the Ozama in a wooden boat. Lunch is cooked by a host family in their home.

Private tour: just your group and your guide. We recommend not wearing jewellery or flashy items; cameras and phones are fine.

Connect with the essence of the Dominican Republic, experience the real life of Santo Domingo and learn about its culture in a reality most visitors to the country never see. We'll share time in a Dominican host home, meet local artisans at work in the community, drink freshly brewed coffee the traditional way and step into the neighbourhood's most characteristic colmados (local corner shops). You'll take part in everyday life, such as a game of dominoes or a stop at the barber's, and see the neighbourhood from a different perspective. We'll discover the springs where locals bathe (you can bathe too), ride the cable car while community members tell us the story of these neighbourhoods, cross the Ozama River by boat and enjoy a traditional lunch cooked with love by our host family. By the end, you'll have had a true immersion in Dominican life.
