Fountain Paint Pot
Shortly after leaving Madison Junction, you’ll see the steaming geothermal area. The first sight is a mud pot-dominated geothermal feature, named for its red, yellow, and brown mud—colors caused by different oxidation states of iron in the mud. One highlight of the mud pots is their “bubbles,” formed by gases released from Yellowstone’s volcano. These bubble patterns change with the seasons.

Grand Prismatic Spring
A 10-minute drive from Fountain Paint Pots brings you to the famous Grand Prismatic Spring, the largest hot spring in the U.S. and the third-largest in the world. It measures 75–91 meters wide, 49 meters deep, and releases about 2,000 liters of 71°C groundwater every minute. A standout of Yellowstone’s hot springs, it spans over 100 meters in diameter, with vivid blue, green, yellow, orange, and red hues radiating outward from its center. It is the largest and most colorful thermal feature in the park.

Old Faithful
A 15-minute drive leads to Yellowstone’s largest visitor center and iconic landmark: Old Faithful. Old Faithful was the first named geyser in Yellowstone National Park and remains its most famous attraction. It erupts approximately every 90 minutes, shooting water up to 40 meters high in a spectacular display. Here, you’ll find a visitor center for learning, shopping for souvenirs, and watching park-related films.

Yellowstone Lake
After a 30-minute drive, a mirror-smooth lake comes into view: this is the West Thumb Geyser Basin on the shore of Yellowstone Lake. Formed by a volcanic caldera collapse 150,000 years ago, this area creates a magical scene when hot springs meet the lake. Steam from the geysers drifts through the air, blending with the lake’s green waters and the blue sky above, creating a landscape unlike any other thermal area in Yellowstone. Acting as a cove on Yellowstone Lake, West Thumb hosts numerous geysers with strikingly varied hues—some clear green, others dark black like wet cement—each vent offering a beautiful, otherworldly sight.

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
After a one-hour drive, we arrive at the canyon section of Yellowstone National Park. Over millions of years, the Yellowstone River carved the dramatic, towering Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Artist Point, located at the top of a cliff on the south rim of the canyon, directly opposite Yellowstone Falls, is the best spot to view both the canyon and the falls. This is where painter Thomas Moran depicted Yellowstone Falls in 1872, hence the name “Artist Point.” The canyon stretches about 20 miles long and reaches depths of up to 1,000 feet. While the canyon’s depth, shape, and the rushing deep green river are impressive, the most unforgettable sight is the dazzling, multicolored volcanic rock. The canyon walls glow with brilliant hues—white, yellow, green, blue, crimson, and countless shades in between—making the entire scene look like a living oil painting. Millions of tons of these rocks hold their vivid colors firmly, neither washed away by the river nor faded by wind and sun.

The town exudes Western cowboy charm in every detail, from exterior facades to interior decor. The world-famous Antler Park is located right in town, home to America’s largest and most impressive elk antler arches. Matching arches stand at each of the park’s four corners, made from naturally shed antlers collected from elk that winter in the National Elk Refuge. It’s a must-visit photo spot for every traveler!

Oxbow Bend
The Snake River flows down from the Jackson Lake Dam, curves sharply near Highway 89 in the direction of Moran, forming a bend shaped like a bison horn—hence the name Oxbow Bend. A pull-off area along the highway offers westward views of the majestic Mount Moran rising dramatically above the river. Its massive granite face is truly awe-inspiring. On calm mornings or evenings, the still water creates a perfect mirror of the snow-capped peaks, making it one of the most iconic photo spots for photographers worldwide. Towering trees and shimmering waters evoke the tranquil landscapes of English countryside paintings. This is one of Grand Teton’s top wildlife-viewing locations, a must-shoot for photographers, and the best vantage point to admire Mount Moran. Grand Teton’s fall foliage draws countless photographers here each autumn.

Teton Point Turnout
Just a short drive south along Highway 191 from Snake River Overlook, you will see a roadside sign for Teton Point Turnout. Upon entering the parking area, you’ll be greeted by an unobstructed panoramic view. Here, the jagged peaks of the Teton Range stretch across the horizon in a dramatic line, showcasing the grandeur of the Grand Tetons. You’ll also spot ancient, permanent glaciers clinging to the mountain faces, offering a truly awe-inspiring sight.

Jackson Lake
Jackson Lake is a natural glacial lake located in Grand Teton National Park, northwestern Wyoming. It is approximately 24 km long, 11 km wide, and up to 134 meters deep, with an average annual water temperature of 16°C. Since the completion of the Jackson Lake Dam, the lake has expanded significantly; its surface water is used by farmers in Idaho for irrigation. The Snake River feeds the lake from the north and flows out through the dam on the lake’s eastern side. The Jenny Lake Trail extends from the southern end of Yellowstone National Park to the northern end of the lake, then runs along the eastern shore. Nearby marinas and lodges offer boat tours. The western shore remains largely undeveloped, making it ideal for hiking, camping, and enjoying serene lake views where the water mirrors the sky and the wind creates gentle ripples.

West Thumb Geyser Basin
In the late afternoon, we return to the Yellowstone Lake area. As America’s largest volcanic lake, Yellowstone Lake offers unique landscapes where geysers and thermal features meet open water, as well as exceptional sunset views. The West Thumb area features one of the park’s most distinctive boardwalks. Here, you’ll see steaming hot springs rising from the shoreline, the crystal-clear waters of Yellowstone Lake, and dramatic views of blue skies and clouds reflected on the water.

Morning Glory Pool
After lunch, we’ll explore the trails behind Old Faithful. Upper Geyser Basin has the highest density of geysers in Yellowstone—of the park’s 200–250 total geysers, around 180 are located here. Along the boardwalk, we’ll visit famous features including Castle Geyser, Grand Geyser, Daisy Geyser, Grotto Geyser, Riverside Geyser, and Morning Glory Pool. This is one of the few places where you can see all four types of geothermal features: fumaroles, hot springs, geysers, and mud pots. If time and energy allow, you can continue along the boardwalk from Morning Glory Pool to Sapphire Pool in the Biscuit Basin area. Morning Glory and Sapphire are the two most distinctive thermal features along this trail.

Midway Geyser Basin
Approximately 40 minutes after entering the park, we arrive at the Grand Prismatic Spring boardwalk. The full trail is about 3 km long: the first half is mostly flat gravel, while the second half includes gentle slopes. Due to weather conditions, the boardwalk is only open to visitors from May through August each year. If you visit outside these months, please take extra caution for your safety.
