Your tour starts early in the morning, with your driver picking you up from your hotel. First stop, one of the most famous winter resorts in the country, the picturesque village of Arachova. After you’ve had some time to explore, we’ll be off to Delphi.
Delphi is the site of the god Apollo’s sanctuary. People of all social standings from all over Greece would flock to this place, bringing their tribute, hoping for an audience with Pythia, the high-priestess and oracle of Apollo. Her prophecies even shaped state policy. Among the sights that you’ll have a chance to visit there, are the Temple of Apollo, the Castalian Spring, the Temple of Athena Pronaia, the theatre and the stadium. The museum hosts several world-renowned exhibits, such as the Statue of Antinous and the Charioteer of Delphi.
On the way to Meteora we’ll make a stop at Thermopylae, where a handful of Spartans and their allies made their stand against the vastly superior invading army of the Persians, in 480 B.C. A monument in honor of King Leonidas of Sparta has been erected on the spot. Over the course of millenia, the terrain has changed significantly due to erosion. A visit at the Historical Information Center of Thermopylae on site will help you understand every aspect of this historic event. After Thermopylae we’ll be off to the city of Kalabaka where we’ll be spending the night.
We kick off the day with a tour of Meteora. Huge pillars of rock rise to the sky, in this impressive geological formation. “Meteora” means “hanging precariously”, and that’s exactly how the monasteries that have been built upon these rocks – dating as far back as the 9th century AD – look like. Second only to the monastic community of Mount Athos, Meteora’s natural beauty and architectural marvels have gained it a well deserved spot in UNESCO’s World Heritage list. While there, you will have the opportunity to walk along beautiful natural trails and visit three of the monasteries in the area.
We will stop for lunch in Kamena Vourla, before heading back to Athens and your accommodation. Kammena Vourla is a small fishing village on the North Aegean Sea .
