If you are looking for an island getaway with abundant birdlife, look no further. Bribie Island is a hidden gem connected to the mainland by only one bridge. On this tour, you will visit several bird hides and pristine beaches, walk through authentic bushland, and explore tidal mudflats with mangroves.
The highlight of the day is a visit to Buckley’s Hole Conservation Park, one of the island’s most significant natural areas. This diverse reserve includes a freshwater lagoon, woodlands, open forest, mangroves, and a quiet beach. More than 190 recorded bird species have been recorded here. It is a haven for birdlife and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife observation in a peaceful setting.
This tour is ideal for those who enjoy a slower pace, with time to observe, photograph, and appreciate the subtle details of coastal ecosystems. It offers a rewarding mix of birdwatching, scenic landscapes, and relaxed exploration on one of Queensland’s most accessible islands.
Pick up can be arranged from your holiday accommodation. Please let me know where you're staying, and we'll take it from there.
After the pick-up, we drive to the Pumicestone Passage, where we will enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beachfront. This walk has excellent birdwatching opportunities and wildflowers. The views over the Glass House Mountains are stunning.
We then drive to Kakadu Beach. Kakadu Beach is a beautiful park and bird sanctuary at Banksia Beach on Bribie Island. We might need to visit Kakadu Beach twice, depending on the tides, to catch up with the migrating birds. It is home to one of the few roost sites in the Pumicestone Passage and a gorgeous place to spend time in nature. Some common bird sightings include the Spotted Dove, Crested Pigeon, Buff-banded Rail, Beach Thick-knee, and the Pied Stilt. Wader species include the Whimbrel, Great Knot, Eastern Curlew, Curlew Sandpiper, Red-necked Stint, Sooty Oystercatcher, and the Lesser Sand Plover, among many others.
We will have lunch at Annie Lane cafe in Bongaree. Annie Lane is an all-day brunch cafe focused on providing a unique and memorable experience.
After lunch at Annie's, we will do a few bushwalks. The “Banksia, Palm Grove, and Melaleuca Bicentennial” bushwalks begin near the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre. We will walk through Eucalypt forests, Paperbark wetlands, and Wallum heathlands. Rainbow Bee-eaters, Red-backed Fairy-wrens, and Eastern Yellow Robins are some of the colorful birds you may encounter.
We will finish or start our tour (depending on the tides) at Buckley’s Hole Conservation Park. Buckley’s Hole covers almost 88 hectares, including a freshwater lagoon, woodlands, open forest, mangroves, swamplands, and a stunning beach. It is a bird-watchers paradise; there are more than 190 species of birdlife that call the conservation park home.
