We drive through the Salzkammergut lake district, past Lake Wolfgang and through Bad Ischl, the old summer town of Emperor Franz Joseph, to Hallstatt on its lake below the Dachstein. In Hallstatt you have about 2 hours: we show you the quieter lanes and the best viewpoints over the lake, and tell you the story of the village, where salt has been mined for more than 7,000 years.

Good to know: our timing avoids the busiest hours of the day buses where we can. If you want to visit the salt mine above the village, tell us when you book and we plan the extra time.
