Before attaining enlightenment at Bodhgaya, Buddha spent nearly six years in these caves practicing intense meditation and severe austerity. During his stay, he followed extreme fasting and self-discipline in search of spiritual truth. Eventually, Buddha realized that harsh self-denial was not the path to enlightenment. This important realization led him to discover the “Middle Path,” a balanced way of life that later became one of the central teachings of Buddhism.
