TOUR NARRATIVE
Discover the historic heart of Kochi through a carefully designed combination of scenic driving and walking tours. This 5-hour experience takes you from your hotel to the atmospheric streets of Fort Kochi, through its colonial landmarks and waterfront, and then onwards to Jewish Town and Mattancherry, where centuries of Jewish, Dutch, Portuguese and Kerala heritage come together.
Rather than seeing Kochi only from a vehicle, this tour allows you to walk through its most interesting historic streets, experience its architecture and neighbourhoods at a relaxed pace, and then use a comfortable vehicle for the longer transfers between the heritage areas.
STEP-BY-STEP TRANSPORT & TOUR EXPERIENCE
1. HOTEL PICK-UP | Beginning of Your Journey
Duration: Approximately 20–40 minutes, depending on hotel location
Your guide and vehicle will meet you at the lobby of your hotel at the agreed starting time.
The vehicle will be selected according to the size of your group:
1–2 guests: Comfortable A/C car
3–4 guests: A/C SUV / Toyota Crysta
5–15 guests: A/C Traveller van
16–30 guests: A/C mini-bus / suitable tourist bus
After welcoming the group, your guide will introduce the day's programme and you will travel towards Fort Kochi, the historic coastal quarter of Kochi.
WALKING TOUR – FORT KOCHI
2. CHURCH OF ST. FRANCIS | Beginning of the Heritage Walk
The vehicle will drop you near the Church of St. Francis, where the first walking section begins.
The Church of St. Francis is one of the most historically important churches in Kochi and is associated with the early European presence in India.
From here, your guide will lead you through the atmospheric streets of Fort Kochi, explaining the area's Portuguese, Dutch and British connections.
3. WALK THROUGH FORT KOCHI'S HERITAGE STREETS
The walking route will include some of the most attractive and characteristic streets of Fort Kochi, depending on the group's pace and local conditions:
Princes Street – historic colonial architecture, cafés and old commercial buildings
Rose Street – quiet heritage surroundings and old European-style buildings
Bastion Street – historic buildings and remnants of the old fortified settlement
Napier Street – atmospheric old Kochi architecture and residential lanes
Peter Celli Street / Parade Ground area – glimpses of Fort Kochi's colonial character
Calvathy Road / waterfront surroundings where appropriate
The guide will point out old residences, trading establishments, colonial buildings, street life and architectural details that are easily missed when travelling by vehicle.
4. CHINESE FISHING NETS | The Waterfront of Fort Kochi
The walk continues towards the famous Chinese Fishing Nets, one of Kochi's most recognisable sights.
Here you can observe the traditional cantilevered fishing structures and, when fishing activity is taking place, see local fishermen operating the nets.
There will be time for photographs and to enjoy the atmosphere of the waterfront.
5. SANTA CRUZ BASILICA | Historic Church
From the waterfront, continue on foot towards Santa Cruz Basilica.
After visiting the Basilica, the walking section of the Fort Kochi experience comes to an end.
VEHICLE TRANSFER
6. FORT KOCHI → DHOBI KHANA
Your vehicle will meet the group at the designated point.
You will then travel by vehicle to Dhobi Khana, Kochi's traditional open-air laundry area.
7. DHOBI KHANA | A Glimpse of Traditional Kochi
At Dhobi Khana, your guide will introduce you to this traditional community laundry facility and explain how the dhobis have traditionally washed, dried and ironed clothes for local residents, hotels and establishments.
This short visit provides a glimpse into a lesser-seen side of everyday Kochi life, beyond the principal tourist monuments.
DHOBI KHANA → JEWISH TOWN
8. TRANSFER TO MATTANCHERRY & JEWISH TOWN
After the Dhobi Khana visit, you will re-board the vehicle and travel towards Mattancherry and Jewish Town.
The vehicle will drop the group at a convenient point from where the second walking section begins.

9. JEWISH TOWN HERITAGE WALK

Walk through the atmospheric lanes of Jewish Town, one of Kochi's most fascinating historic neighbourhoods.
The walking route will include:
Jew Street – the heart of the historic Jewish quarter
Synagogue Lane and surrounding heritage lanes
Mattancherry Palace / Dutch Palace surroundings
Historic spice warehouses and old trading buildings
Antique shops and traditional establishments
Old residences reflecting the area's multicultural heritage
Your guide will explain the history of the Jewish community, spice trade, European connections and the relationship between the different communities that shaped Mattancherry.
10. DUTCH PALACE / MATTANCHERRY PALACE
Visit the historic Mattancherry Palace, commonly known as the Dutch Palace.
The palace provides an opportunity to see Kerala-style architecture combined with influences from the colonial period, as well as its historic murals and royal associations.
Entry to attractions is subject to opening hours and ticket availability.
11. PARADESI SYNAGOGUE
Continue walking through Jew Town to the historic Paradesi Synagogue.
The synagogue and its surrounding quarter provide an important insight into the long history of the Jewish community in Kochi and its connections with the wider Indian Ocean trading world.
The visit completes the main heritage walking experience.
RETURN TO YOUR HOTEL
12. JEWISH TOWN → HOTEL DROP-OFF
At the conclusion of the walking tour, the group will return to the vehicle.
Your guide will accompany you back to your hotel in the same comfortable A/C vehicle used for the tour.
You will be dropped off at the hotel lobby, bringing the experience to a convenient end.
