1Irazu Volcano National Park
Travel from San José to Irazú Volcano, Costa Rica’s highest volcano, on a scenic journey through the Central Volcanic Range. As you ascend, the landscape changes from coffee plantations and farmland to the cool, high-altitude vegetation at the summit. At Irazú Volcano National Park, explore the Craters sector and enjoy views of its impressive volcanic landscape and surrounding highlands. At 3,432 m (11,260 ft) above sea level, the summit offers a dramatic change in scenery and climate. Weather can change quickly, and clouds or fog may limit visibility. On clear days, views can extend across Costa Rica toward the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. After your volcano visit, descend to historic Cartago. Visit the ruins of the former Parish of Santiago Apóstol and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, one of Costa Rica’s most important religious landmarks. This full-day experience combines volcanic scenery, highland landscapes and Costa Rican history in a convenient trip from San José.
