    Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the revered deity of learning and scholarship. It serves as the head shrine of approximately 12,000 Tenmangu shrines throughout Japan and is the largest shrine of its kind in Kyushu. Besides the vermilion-colored main hall and beautiful gardens, visitors can explore historical sites such as Tenkai Inari Shrine, the Treasure Hall, and the Sugawara History Museum. The shrine grounds feature centuries-old camphor and oak trees, seasonal flowers, and the famous plum blossoms that Michizane loved dearly. One of the shrine's most famous attractions is the sacred "Flying Plum Tree" (Tobiume), which legend says flew overnight from Kyoto to Dazaifu out of devotion to Michizane. Students from all over Japan visit the shrine to pray for success in examinations and academic achievement. During exam season, the shrine gates are covered with ema (wooden prayer plaques), creating a spectacular sight.
