The Steen is closely linked to the origin of Antwerp. It is the last visible remnant of the walled fortress that defined the city's appearance for centuries.
The city hall in Antwerp was built in the 16th century. It's where important political decisions for Antwerp are made. The architect, Cornelis Floris de Vriendt, combined old-style design with new ideas from Italy. In 1936, the building was declared a special place by UNESCO because of its historical importance.
