Buda Castle District Kickstart Tour (incl. entries)

2 hours (approximately)
Offered in: German and 1 more

You've just arrived in Budapest and you've certainly heard about the Buda Castle before: the impressive building rising proudly and majestically above the Danube and one of your many thoughts is: "I'm sure to go up there." The castle is not entirely what you expect though: it's the entire district up on that hill and what you thought of is "just" the royal palace.

This is your tour, if:
1. You have a good 2 hours at your disposal and are not looking for a longer tour. P.S. Sometimes even 2 hours can seem a lot... I know.
2. You want to know more about the castle area, but also not too much history. :-)
3. You've always wondered what the Fisherman's Bastion is. I usually get those "aha!" moments.
4. You want to get some of the best views in town
5. You don't want to bother with entrance fees to the Church and Bastion. This is the one church I recommend everyone to check out from the inside.

I work with flexible start times, so that part is really up to you.

Entrance fees to both the Matthias Church and the Bastion

Meeting and pickup

Meeting point

Our meeting place is in front of the Holy Trinity Monument (the central monument in front of the church)

Itinerary

Duration: 2 hours (approximately)
  • 1
    Matthias Church

Our first stop is the iconic Matthias Church, which we will visit from the inside as well in order to get to know it a little bit better and see what it has in store for us.

    35 minutes Admission ticket included
  • 2
    Fisherman's Bastion

Our second stop is the enchanting Fisherman's Bastion, which seems to have come out of a fairly tale and offers some of the most spectacular views of the city.

    15 minutes Admission ticket included
  • (Pass by)

We will pass by one of the most peculiar buildings of the Castle District: the brutalist Hilton Hotel.

    Admission ticket free
  • Karmelita Kolostor (Pass by)

The former Carmelite monastery functioned as the office of the prime-ministry until the 2026 elections. We will be passing by this one as well.

    Admission ticket free
  • Sandor Palace (Pass by)

The Sandor (Alexandrine) Palace has been the seat of the president of Hungary for over 2 decades now. If we arrive at a set time, we might even catch the changing of the guard.

    Admission ticket free
  • 3
    Buda Hill Funicular

One of our most unique means of transportation and the quickest way to enter the Castle District, the Buda Castle Funicular has been in use for over 150 years now. We will stop by the upper station, but not use the funicular.

15 minutes Admission ticket not included
  • 4
    Buda Castle

While the title "castle" is misleading, this defines the entire district on the mountain and not just a singular building. We will stop around the Royal Palace in several places, but will not enter it. The royal palace houses 3 museums and neither of them operate as a palace museum, so there is nothing to see inside from the royal age.

20 minutes Admission ticket not included
  • 5
    Fountain of King Matthias

The most impressive historical fountain of the city features one of the most important kings of the country: Matthias. This will be our last stop.

    15 minutes Admission ticket free
